Astronomy From Space

with Ben Dorman

abstract

Space astronomy has the advantage over ground-based observations with the ability to collect datain wavelength ranges that do not penetrate the Earth's atmosphere,as well as providing clear images not affected by the atmosphere. Space observatories particularly those launched after the availability of high resolution digital cameras have produced spectacular images which have revolutionized and popularized astronomical imaging. But space observations have also confirmed our fundamental theories of physics.

We will review he study of the Early Universe from Space, NASA's Great Observatories (Hubble, Chandra, Compton, and Spitzer) and the James Webb Space Telescope, and show how they combine to add to our understanding of the cosmos.

Please note that this Star Party will be starting at 6:30pm, and ending at 10pm.

Bio

Ben received a Ph.D. from the University of Victoria, after which he moved to the Washington DC area, working on space based astronomy at the University of Virginia, and then secured a Research Associateship at NASA/Goddard Spaceflight Center.

He continued research into stellar populations from space before joining the High Energy Astrophysics Science Archive Research Center, also at NASA/Goddard. He has been the Chair of the Friends of the DAO since its inception in 2015
