The Dominion Astrophysical Observatory is a designated National Historical Site. Its telescope was the largest operational instrument in the world when it opened in 1918. The Centre of the Universe, its visitors’ centre and a Greater Victoria attraction, offers a unique opportunity to see the historic telescope in action. It has an exhibit gallery and planetarium showing the stars and full dome movies. It also presents stargazing experiences and virtual reality programs.
As well as being open for public viewing since June 1918, the big telescope is still used every clear night for scientific research. Tour the telescope and learn the history of this amazing machine that mapped the Milky Way Galaxy!
Please contribute! All proceeds go directly to supporting our scientific outreach efforts in Victoria. They will be used to improve the Centre of the Universe building, update current exhibits, and ensure that we have the necessary and appropriate equipment for effective science communication.
