History in the Progression of Science
with Jessica Westlake, University College London
Why is the history of science, along with the technology that influenced it, so vital to modern discovery? In this presentation, I examine how understanding the past enables us to advance science, especially in astronomy and astrophysics. Over time, scientists have built upon previous ideas, corrected mistakes, and rethought what was once accepted as fact. Ultimately, science exists within a network, a web of ideas, tools, and people connected across time. Recognizing that network reminds us that progress does not happen in isolation. It develops from the history we inherit, the knowledge we challenge, and the tools we continue to use to explore the unknown.
In this presentation we will investigate the question “why is the history of science and the historical technology used essential for the progression of modern science?”
