Star Party: From stardust to core: the birth of our planet and its inner secrets

with Andrew Schaeffer

SUMMARY:

This presentation explores the fascinating journey of our planet from its cosmic origins to its complex inner structure. We delve into the processes that transformed interstellar dust into the Earth we know today, touching on the stages of planetary formation. Additionally, we’ll uncover the mysteries of the Earth’s interior, from crust to core, how we make these observations, and discuss how these otherwise hidden layers influence the planet’s behaviour and life on its surface.

bio

Andrew Schaeffer is a Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria. As a seismologist, Andrew uses both computers and seismic instruments continuously collecting measurements of ground vibrations to determine when, where, and how often earthquakes occur. This involves lots of trips to deploy and maintain these complex instruments, both locally in southwest BC as well as in the Canadian Arctic. Andrew also co-runs the SchoolShake Program, which is working to improve geoscience literacy and interest from the ground up through the placement of miniaturized Raspberry-Pi based seismometers (``Raspberry Shakes’’) into BC Schools, while also providing teaching materials and support for teachers interested in bringing this societally relevant study to school-aged children.
