Astronomer Guy Worthey studies the starlight coming from galaxies. Astronomers, or "light detectives," often spread incoming light into its rainbow, or spectrum. These spectra can shed light (pun intended) on basic questions about galaxies. How did these island universes assemble? When? How and where did heavy elements arise? In this talk, Worthey will review this ongoing detective story and point out a promising new technique for measuring galaxy ages.
