Dark Matter and Cosmology
with Sarah Alshamaily
Summary
If you are interested to know more about "dark matter", then this talk is for you. Together, we will explore the nature of dark matter, evidence for its existence, and the different efforts that are trying to understand it better. Using these efforts, we will also learn what could be potentially make up dark matter and why. Finally, this talk will conclude with what the universe would be like if there was no dark matter present, and what that could mean for the formation of galaxies just like our Milky Way.
Bio
Sarah graduated from the University of Victoria with a BSc degree in Physics and Astronomy in May 2022. After graduation, she undertook many research projects with the university, mainly in experimental particle physics working with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Her main goal is to pursue a MSc degree studying the nature and behavior of dark matter in either experimental particle physics or astrophysics. Her mother tongue is Arabic, so she leverages that on her social media platforms to engage in STEM outreach to help, inspire, and educate those around her.
