An Overview: The History of Women in Astronomy w/ Marjie Welchframe

  • Dominion Astrophysical Observatory 5071 West Saanich Road Victoria, BC Canada (map)

This talk is also part of the September 11th Star Party

Women were not part of the pursuit of astronomy as a science until the 1700s, due to social pressures and a lack of systematic scientific education. Their only option was to commit to astronomy as a hobby or to act as recording assistants to their husbands/brothers. Eventually, the role of women as astronomers evolved! Who discovered the Horse Head Nebula in 1888? Who was responsible for measurements which were key to the concept of the Big Bang/the expansion of the universe? Who were the women who broke ground for Andrea Ghez to receive the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics? How many Canadian women astronomers can you name? Join us for an overview of Women in Astronomy whose passion has been to gaze skywards into the universe!

Who are these famous women astronomers? Find out on September 11!
